About XYZnet

XYZnet is a community IRC network focused on reliability, modern linking (TS6), and practical services — without the legacy baggage of classic multi-service clutter.

What is XYZnet?

XYZnet is an Internet Relay Chat network. Users connect with an IRC client to irc.XYZnet.org, join channels like #XYZ, chat in real time, and use services to register nicknames and protect channels.

The network runs XYZircd (a Solanum-based IRCd tailored for XYZnet) and Rustic IRC Services (X, Y, Z, Weather, LastFM) linked as services.XYZnet.org. Network statistics are collected by thales-XYZ-v1 and published at stats.XYZnet.org. Connection security is handled by scanner.XYZnet.org (bot Monitor) — EFnet DNSBL plus local ban/exempt lists at scanner.XYZnet.org.

What is IRC?

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a text-based protocol for real-time group and private messaging, originally from the late 1980s. Unlike many modern chat apps, IRC is federated: multiple servers can link into one network, and open-source clients exist for every platform.

You connect to a server, choose a nickname, join channels (rooms), and talk. Operators and services provide moderation, registration, and network management.

What is an IRCd?

An IRCd (IRC daemon) is the server software that accepts client connections, routes messages, and links to other servers. XYZnet uses XYZircd, based on Solanum (charybdis lineage), with XYZnet-specific cloaking, defaults, and branding.

Key ideas: server-to-server protocol TS6, user/channel modes, operator privileges, and configuration split between local ircd.conf and network-wide XYZnet.conf.

What are IRC Services?

Services are special network agents that hold state outside the IRCd: registered nicknames, channel access lists, memos, vhosts, and operator tools. On XYZnet, services are provided by Rustic:

Classic names like NickServ/ChanServ are reserved stubs that point users to #XYZ for help; the real commands live on X, Y, and Z.
